Hollywood Royale: Out of the School of Los Angeles by Matthew Rolston
Hollywood Royale: Out of the School of Los Angeles is a retrospective of Matthew Rolston’s editorial portraits from the 1980’s, many commissioned by Andy Warhol for Warhol’s Interview magazine, featuring over 100 photographs selected from an extensive body of work.
The book includes texts by authors Pat Hackett, Andy Warhol's longtime collaborator and diarist; Colin Westerbeck, noted photographic historian and expert on American photographer Irving Penn; and a signature essay entitled Glamour Reborn: Out of the School of Los Angeles by Charles Churchward, longtime creative director of Vogue and Vanity Fair, and author of Herb Ritts, The Golden Hour, the definitive biography of the late photographer.
Hollywood Royale paints a detailed picture of Rolston in the context of his photographic contemporaries, surveying the film stars, musicians, and artists he portrayed during this period. Rolston’s photographs recall the glamour of old Hollywood with postmodern irony, helping to point the way towards the cult of fame we live with today.
Printed in four colors and duotone on warm-toned, cotton-rag stock, Hollywood Royale: Out of the School of Los Angeles was published concurrent with Rolston’s 2017-18 multi-venue exhibition.
Hardcover: 15.25 × 11.25 x 1.5 inches, 238 pages, 136 four-color and duotone plates, 6 gatefolds.
